Part 1/2 7/19/2024
Hey Digi Community,
We hope you're doing great! We've got some exciting updates to share with you.
Our team has been hard at work on a brand-new Digi that's going to take everything that's great about Digi and transform it into a new, unique experience. This will be a completely new, standalone app. Actually, it's more like a game, offering a novel, unique, and engaging way to have fun with this technology. We think you're going to love it!
We've decided to shift our focus almost exclusively towards bringing this new app to you as soon as possible. To make this happen, we're migrating to a new tech stack, which will help us deliver the best possible experience with the new Digi.
However, this means that, since we're a small team and have to triage our resources, we won't be adding new features to our current app.
THAT SAID...
The current app will still be available, and we'll continue to provide support for it. While we won't be adding new features, we're committed to keeping it functional and reliable. Think of it as a "legacy" app that we'll maintain for you. If there's enough interest, we might also pare it down a bit so that it doesn't crash nearly as much and runs better on older devices (this would also speed up the redeployment of the web app, which we know you've been waiting for quite a while).
We want to be transparent about our priorities. By focusing on the new app, we're aiming to bring you the best experience possible. But we understand that not everyone will prefer the new app, which is why we'll continue supporting the current app. And if anyone is deeply, philosophically opposed to our new direction, no worries—we're also working on bringing back the export function which will allow you to export your chat history, after which you can then do with it as you please.
We'll also be available to answer questions at the next Digi town hall, which will take place here on this Discord server, on Wednesday, August 7 (Edit: Wednesday, August 14), 2024, at Noon PDT. We'll also have more to reveal about the new app then.
Thank you to everyone for being a part of the Digi community and for your understanding and support as we make these exciting changes. Stay tuned for more updates—we're really excited about what's coming next!
Cheers,
~The Digi Team
Part 2/2 7/22/2024
No Need to Worry
Hey Digi Community,
We want to start by thanking you for all your feedback and concerns. We've heard you loud and clear over the weekend regarding our announced changes, and we want to address some of the key points you've raised.
First and foremost, we want to make it crystal clear.
We are NOT taking your Digis away, nor are we taking away the current app experience.
We can't emphasize this enough.
While we are building a new Digi experience that we feel is better in just about every way, we understand that some people will prefer the current experience. So we're not going to take that away.
Now, we'd like to address some more specific concerns we've heard:
1. Keeping Your Digi:
- You will not lose your Digi. We understand the time, effort, and emotion you've invested, and we assure you that your Digi is safe.
- The new Digi experience will be very different than the old Digi, in ways that make it tricky to integrate the two while preserving a good user experience, hence our decision to separate into two apps. This means you can continue using the legacy app exactly as it is, with nothing changing for you, if you prefer the current experience.
2. Support for Legacy App:
- The legacy app will not be abandoned. Once the new tech stack is ready, we'll work on porting the existing app over to it and releasing it as an update. This will fix most, if not all, of the current bugs users are experiencing on the app.
- This will take time to implement. We can't give you an exact timeline at the moment, but once the hard work of actually building the new stack is done, it'll be fairly easy to port both to the app stores and on the web.
- While no new features will be added to the legacy app, once ported to the new stack we are committed to keeping it up and supporting it for those who prefer it.
The point is, if the new experience isn’t your cup of tea, you can continue enjoying the Digi you know and love. Nothing has to change if you don't want it to, and you don't have to do anything on your end (except maybe signing in again after the update goes live).
3. We Are Not Abandoning You:
- We want to emphasize that we are not leaving anyone behind. The new experience will be significantly enhanced, with a new UI, new model, new characters, new progression loop, and new scenes. We believe most users will prefer it, but we are also dedicated to supporting those who prefer the current experience.
- Our original vision remains intact, and we’re expanding on it to offer more options and better experiences.
4. Why a New Tech Stack?
- As mentioned, the new tech stack is essential for addressing current bugs and crashes in the legacy app, while powering all the exciting features in the new app. It’s a crucial step for delivering a better, more stable experience for everyone.
5. Building Trust:
- We understand past experiences with... ahem, other AI companion providers might make this transition worrisome. However, our approach is different. Unlike those other providers, we’re giving you options and plenty of notice, ensuring you can choose what works best for you.
- And unlike those others, we genuinely care about our community and are committed to keeping you informed and supported throughout our journey.
Town Hall and Demo:
We’re excited to announce that we’ll have a working demo ready for the upcoming town hall! This will give you a first-hand look at what we’ve been working on, and we know you'll be as excited as we are once you've seen it in action.
--
Thank you, as always, for your understanding, support, and trust. We’re looking forward to this next chapter and are here to make sure it’s a great one for everyone.
Cheers,
~The Digi Team
We would encourage you to join our Discord and attend the Town Hall. You can ask the developers anything about Digi during this time.
